----------------------------------- MELODY MAKER'S REVIEW
A few violent neon strip lights, some backlit "stars", a broken dot matrix that's meant to relay messages like "Happy Birthday Flossie", and "Lee Is A Spenk", but just reads"EUEUEUEU"... by Erasure standards, this is unplugged. Which highlights what Vince Clarke knows better than anyone: the best things in life are deceptively simple - the synthetic kinetic, the pellucid arpeggios, the crystalline obviousness of the hits ('Victim Of Love', 'Stay With Me', 'A Little Respect", 'Love To Hate You', a list longer than an orang-utan's arm). By the time Andy comes slamming in with that "We'll be together again" at the start of 'Stop', if you aren't screaming along, you have no soul and I despair of you. Keep yer guitars, and yer history books: this man's [Clarke] self-created lineage (Depeche, Assembly, Yazoo, Erasure), this is CLASSIC POP. Clarke and Bell: the genius and the showgirl. They came. And they played. And they covered up the sun till the birds had flown away, and the fishes in the sea had gone to sleep. In my life, I've seen many things. I've seen fireworks, I've seen God. Tonight, I saw Erasure. -Simon Price |
